Two Cambodian Swimmers Off to Tokyo 2020

Phnom Penh: The Khmer Swimming Federation has released the names of the two swimmers who will compete for Olympic glory in the pool next month. They are Hem Poch and Mei-Li Minnich, a Cambodian-American who recently graduated from high school in the US state of Indiana. Secretary-General of the KSF, Mr. Hem Kiry, says although Cambodia did not participate in the qualifications, it can still send the two swimmers under the IOC’s “wild card” mechanism.

The Covid-delayed Tokyo 2020 Summer Games are set to begin on the 23rd of July. Regardless of the general excitement, there are still some problems. The olympics’ first Covid-19 case was found in a member of Uganda's Olympic team. He has no symptoms, but will probably be barred from competing.

The host committee has adopted strict measures to ensure safety at venues and the athlete’s village, but many believe Japan is playing with fire. It has fully vaccinated less than 7% of its population. Doctors have warned that an Olympic super-spreader event could push Japan's overstretched healthcare system to the brink. Already, at least 10,000 of the 80,000 people who signed up to help at the Games have quit and Japan's top coronavirus adviser claims that staging the Olympics without spectators would be "desirable."
